Business
A successful recipe for startups

Less is more. Keep it simple. If there was ever an all-encompassing theme for successful businesses, it's that they stuck to keeping things simple.

Of course, no two entrepreneurs or businesses are identical; however, there are definitely several overlapping principles which affect the successful launch of any brand and company.  Often, it's an oversight of the basics which lead to the failure of many small businesses in South Africa.  According to recent reports, as many as 70% of small businesses fail within 24 months of launching.

As an entrepreneur, it's wise to keep this in mind while exploring the following five principles to increase your chances of launching a successful business.

1. Understanding your customer.

Continually learning and improving is a fundamental "Kaizen" principle which became famous for its monumental success in Toyota's production system. A crucial aspect includes managing critical relationships with your suppliers, employees and of course, your customer base. All of these are critical, but the latter represents the livelihood of your profits.

Be sure to understand the ever-changing and dynamic needs of your customers while remaining adaptive to current trends and be sensitive to the prevailing benefits which your niche market seeks when conducting business with your company.

2. Provide a service or product that is unique.

While your product or service might not necessarily be revolutionary, you still need to distinguish your offering, particularly from your competition. Eventually, the passion, service delivery and quality of your business should assist in your capturing and retaining your target market.  The goal is to develop a sustainable and credible business model.

3. Create and define your brand image.

In today's competitive landscape, it's wise never to underestimate the power of effective branding. A solid corporate identity, professionally designed logo, business cards, website and portfolio, should form key aspects of your marketing strategy.  A thought-provoking, striking logo has the potential to become an iconic (think Apple) symbol, which will capture the attention of your prospect clients and ultimately will entice them to investigate your offering further.

4. Put the focus on your core competencies.

A robust understanding of your essential skills and strengths while ensuring that you excel at them is critical to your business's success. This is undeviatingly connected to your productivity and thus, your turnover and profit margins. Prevailing at the forefront of your industry might require continual training and this perhaps best reflected in professional arenas which are built on continuous professional development (CPD) – such as engineering, for example.

At the same time, never hesitate to recruit the services of specialists in specific projects which require the necessity of niche experts. It never hurts to outsource help from specialists here and there so that you can focus on the aspects of your business which are your strengths.

5. Foster an office space which is in harmony.

It's no secret that crafting a productive and healthy work environment has several benefits.  A team which is built with excellent morale, teamwork, performance incentives, mutual respect and a robust customer-driven focus generally leads to open-minded and creative workspaces.

These five key focus areas are imperative to establishing a sustainable business and are essential ingredients in the recipe for many years of success of your business. By investing the time and work towards crafting a solid foundation from the get-go, your business will thrive for years to come.
